Get Lit at Glow in the Park!

Time to get lit again, Suwanee – the Glow in the Park community lantern parade returns on April 14! Join us as a strolling jazz band leads an illuminated pageant of light, music, and color around Town Center Park, ending at a concert starring The Glow Band at the park stage.

So, who gets to be in the parade? You do! This event is a community celebration of creativity; everyone is strongly encouraged to create illuminated costumes and carry their pre-made lanterns to parade together! The North Gwinnett Arts Association is hosting multiple make-and-take lantern workshops.

Click here for everything you need to know about Glow in the Park, and we'll see you (because you'll be all lit up!) on April 14 in Town Center Park!

Ride Along with Suwanee's Finest

Suwanee's Citizens Police Academy allows residents a better understanding of the day-to-day functions of police officers as well as an opportunity to patrol Suwanee's streets alongside an officer. The next academy will be offered Monday evenings April 16-June 28 from 6:30-9:00 pm at the Suwanee Police Training Center, 2966 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road.

The academy offers classroom training and hands-on experiences in crime scene processing, traffic stops, building searches, crime prevention, and narcotics identification and provides an understanding of the risks and responsibilities of officers. The program is designed to open and maintain communication between citizens and the police department.

Classes are free and open to the public, but space is limited and preference is given to Suwanee residents or those who work in the City of Suwanee. A criminal and driver history background is required for all applicants. For additional information and an application, contact Officer Richard Pope at rpope@suwanee.com or 770-904-7641. Notarized applications are due Friday, April 12, 2018.

Suwanee Named Tree City USA

The City of Suwanee was once again named a 2017 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Tree City USA program has been greening up cities and towns across America since 1976. It is a nationwide movement that provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees.

More than 3,400 communities with a combined population of 140 million people made the commitment to become a Tree City USA.

The Suwanee City Council presented the 2018 Arbor Day proclamation at the March council meeting. The city will celebrate Arbor Day with its annual tree planting on Sunday, April 29 at The Orchard at White Street Park. Please email whitestreetorchard@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering.

The City of Suwanee is looking for designers, artists, and creative people in general to submit logo designs for Suwanee Fest 2018. The designer of the winning logo will see his or her design on official festival t-shirts and marketing posters, as well as receive a $500 prize.

The competition is open to professional and amateur designers of all ages. Entries should be submitted in printed and electronic format. The deadline for submissions is April 13. City of Suwanee Named 2017 Crown Community

The City of Suwanee has recently been named a 2017 Crown Community by American City & County magazine for its work on the Orchard at White Street Park. The first public orchard in the southeastern U.S., the orchard is a collaboration between the city, nonprofit community garden Harvest Farm, and local landscape architect Roger Grant.

Suwanee funded the $183,471 project using special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) funds. Community volunteers sowed fruiting plants and installed birdhouses, trellises, and huts made of living willow trees. Grant's 200 hours of donated design and work contributed an estimated value of $22,000.

Moving forward, the city will give an annual $1,000 to the orchard's management committee, and its public works department will handle ongoing maintenance, which will involve organic pesticides.

Since 1909, American City & County has recognized local governments for extraordinary work in their communities. The magazine received over 75 applications from cities and counties across the U.S. and recognized six innovative and impactful local government projects in 2017, choosing projects with meaningful issues, clever solutions, innovative implementation, measurable results, and ultimately replicable ideas.
